Getting kids to eat their vegetables. Sometimes that can be nearly impossible. Good luck!
As a parent who raised four children, the idea of Bloomers Island presented itself to me as I struggled to get my kids to eat more vegetables and live a healthier lifestyle.
One day I made up little garden characters named the Bloomers. They lived in a mythical place called, Bloomers Island where they grew their own vegetables and ate them too!
When my children would visit my family's farm in Pennsylvania, they would look for the Bloomers in the garden and laugh with delight as we dug up potatoes and carrots. They always ate the vegetables they harvested!
Where Ideas Meet Real Impact
In this day and age, where shockingly, more than one in ten preschoolers are obese, the idea of Bloomers Island continued to grow on me. So on a chilly Earth Day in 2011, I started a Bloomers Island gardening program for schools.
After working for my years and with thousands of children across the country, I learned three things about gardening with kids:
1. It has to be fun for the kids, or else they won't do it. 2. It has to be eaasy for the grownups, or else they won't do it. 3. It has to be mysterious for everyone, so they WANT to do it.
Our Bloomers Island gardening products take care of number 1 and 2 pretty easily. But, how did I create the mystery in Number 3?
Simple ... into the gardening tasks I wove the story of the Bloomers and Bloomers Island where plants became the intelligent species. Of course no human had ever been to Bloomers Island. The kids were inspired and with the Bloomers' help, everyone was able to grow their own food.
What's Next for Bloomers... I am excited to announce that through Rodale Kids, an imprint of Random House Children's Books. Bloomers Island is releasing a complete set of nine books to inspire your Bloomers. The books are about the adventures of the Bloomers and all the lessons they learn on their magical island. Each character has their own book which includes stickers, how-to lessons, and a healthy recipe. On Bloomers Island, we think that healthy eating is a habit that all children can benefit from and healthy eating habits start young.
And here's the thing, I have found in working with thousands of children that kids who grow their own vegetables, eat their own vegetables.
Now, the first five books in the Bloomers Island series, have been released!
My personal goal is to educate 10,001 children with this series of books...and I'm going to need your help.
